When should you start considering braces?
You may have heard before that you should only seek for orthodontic treatment when all your adult teeth are out. However, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) states that children should see an orthodontist no later than the age of 7. We agree with the recommendation.
There are benefits to take your child to a dentist at a young age. At the age of 7, their first adult molars would have started to emerge, this allows the dentist to evaluate the type of bite the child has. Early potential orthodontic or airway problems can also be identified and addressed early if necessary.
Types of Conventional Fixed Braces
We provide comprehensive orthodontic treatments to suit each patient’s condition, specific needs and lifestyle. The two main types of orthodontic treatment available are conventional braces and clear and removable braces such as Invisalign. For more information on Invisalign, please click here.
Self-Ligating Braces
Another option we offer at GPlus Dental Centre is the 3M™ SmartClip™ Self-Ligating Brackets. Self –ligating braces eliminate the need for ties.
Instead, the specialized bracket holds the archwire in place by means of a clip built into the lower profile contour of the bracket.
These “intelligent” clips release the archwire if forces are excessive, and lets the archwire move smoothly through the brackets to create effective tooth movement. This makes self-ligating braces more comfortable than metal or ceramic braces. For the appearance of your self-ligating braces, you can choose either a metal or ceramic material.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces have brackets that are clear or else colored the same colour as your teeth, and usually blend in with your teeth better than metal braces. The mechanics of how it works is the same as having metal braces. One key difference is that the brackets is made from a clear ceramic material instead of stainless steel, hence making them less noticeable than traditional metal braces. However, something to note is that ceramic bracket material may not be as durable as metal stainless steel.
What to expect?
Generally, you will expect some discomfort and soreness during the first 4-5 days after you first have your braces on. There will be some diet restrictions such as chewing on hard or sticky food that may cause discomfort and your wires may break. But this is something you will get used to during the course of treatment which typically takes up to 24 months.
Alternatively, you can consider a more comfortable alternative such as Invisalign clear aligner braces.
No matter which type of braces you choose, wearing a retainer after orthodontic treatment is necessary. Typically you need to wear it day and night (except when you’re eating and drinking) for the first year, after which you can choose to wear it only at night when you sleep. If you do not wear your retainers after your orthodontic treatment, your teeth may slowly drift and move back to their original position. Wearing retainers requires very low maintenance and we will guide you when the time comes.
