What is Gum Recession?
Gum recession is also known as gingival recession and happens when your gum loses tissue, exposing the roots of your teeth.
As a result, your teeth become more sensitive and more likely to develop cavities. Your gums are also more likely to become infected because of the exposure.
Gum recession can affect 1 or more teeth.
Causes of Gum Recession
- Poor dental hygiene
- Plaque
- Periodontal disease
- Smoking
- Injury to gums
How Pinhole Surgery Helps with Gum Recession
Pinhole surgery treats gum recession by stimulating novel tissue growth in problem areas. It is a relatively quick procedure, taking only 1-2 hours. Here are the different steps in the treatment.
Pinhole creation
Your dentist will use a needle to make a tiny hole in the area where your gum is receding
Gum loosening
Using a special instrument, your dentist will loosen the tissue in the treatment area, stretching it to the desired level over the exposed teeth.
Collagen insertion
Finally, your dentist will insert collagen strips in the treatment area, over the exposed teeth.
As the gum heals and the collagen takes effect, you should see the receding areas of your gum line become full again.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Gum Recession

- Tooth sensitivity – you may experience pain while eating and drinking, especially hot or cold items
- Plaque and tooth decay – bacteria can accumulate around your exposed teeth, increasing your chances of getting gum disease and tooth infections
- Cavities and tooth loss – gum recession can cause permanent damage to the surface of your teeth and, ultimately, lead to tooth loss
- Psychological harm – gum recession can make you more conscious about how you look.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is pinhole dental surgery suitable for everyone?
Pinhole surgery is suitable for many individuals with gum recession. However, it is best to consult with a qualified dentist or periodontist to determine if you are a good candidate. Factors such as the severity of gum recession, overall oral health and the presence of other dental conditions will be considered during the evaluation.
Are there any risks or complications associated with pinhole dental surgery?
Pinhole surgery is considered safe, but as with any dental procedure, there are some potential risks and complications. These can include temporary sensitivity in the treated teeth, minor bleeding or swelling, infection and allergic reactions to materials used during the procedure. However, when performed by a skilled and experienced professional, the risks are generally minimal.
How long does the recovery take after pinhole surgery?
Most patients can resume their normal activities within a day or two after the procedure. Some minor discomfort, sensitivity and swelling may persist for a few days, but these usually subside quickly.
Does pinhole dental surgery provide long-lasting results?
Yes, by repositioning the gum tissue, the procedure helps to stabilise the gum line and protect the exposed tooth roots. However, it is essential to maintain good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing and professional dental cleanings, to ensure the long-term success of the treatment.
How much does pinhole surgery cost?
The cost of pinhole dental surgery can vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the case and the number of teeth being treated. It is best to consult a dental professional for a personalised cost estimate.
